The Island Potato Farmers;
Farmers on the isle of Jersey work had to bring in the first potato crop of the year, Jersey Royals.
Jersey Royals are the only vegetable to have PDO status (Produce of Designated Origin, like Champagne or Parma Ham), denoting geographical uniqueness in site, and cultivation as well as in variety. In Jersey, the well-drained, often steep, south-facing slopes warm up quickly ,enjoying the intensified rays of refracted sunlight, the steeper coastal slopes or ‘Cotils’, produce the very first, small and most delicate ‘Brown Gold’, tenderly hand-picked, despite the incline, bagged to protect from sunlight and whisked away for immediate consumption. Like all early potatoes, Jersey Royals do not keep, are best bought with soil still on and eaten on day of digging
